# God's Way vs. Human Resistance: A Persistent Pattern
Ellen White addressed this tension repeatedly in her writings, showing that throughout history, God's people have often resisted His guidance and chosen their own way instead. She wrote clearly: **"God does not give one man new light contrary to the established faith of the body"** (
5T 291.2), yet individuals continually arise claiming special insight that contradicts what God has already revealed to His church. This pattern of human resistance to divine guidance has caused repeated delays and setbacks in God's work.
## The Tragic Consequences of Choosing Our Own Way
The most sobering illustration Ellen White gave of this principle was Israel's wilderness wandering. She explained: **"It was not the will of God that Israel should wander forty years in the wilderness; He desired to lead them directly to the land of Canaan and establish them there, a holy, happy people. But 'they could not enter in because of unbelief.'
Hebrews 3:19. Because of their backsliding and apostasy they perished in the desert, and others were raised up to enter the Promised Land"** (
GC 458.2). This reveals that God's original plan was direct and swift, but human unbelief and resistance forced a forty-year delay.
She applied this same principle to the delay of Christ's second coming: **"In like manner, it was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be so long delayed and His people should remain so many years in this world of sin and sorrow. But unbelief separated them from God. As they refused to do the work which He had appointed them, others were raised up to proclaim the message"** (
GC 458.2). The delay we experience today is not God's preference—it results from His people's resistance to His way.
## How People Resist God's Guidance
Ellen White identified several specific ways people work contrary to God's plans. One major problem is rejecting unpopular truths clearly revealed in Scripture. She wrote: **"As the religious organizations of the day have refused to listen to unpopular truths plainly brought to view in the Scriptures, they have sown broadcast the seeds of skepticism"** (
4SP 404.1). When people find God's requirements inconvenient—like the Sabbath commandment—they often reject the entire law rather than submit to what they don't want to obey.
Another form of resistance is choosing independent judgment over God's appointed channels of guidance. Ellen White warned: **"There will be, among the remnant of these last days, as there were with ancient Israel, those who wish to move independently, who are not willing to submit to the teachings of the Spirit of God, and who will not listen to advice or counsel"** (
MR311 8.2). She emphasized that **"just as surely as they do this, they will depart from the faith, and disaster and the ruin of souls will follow"** (
MR311 8.2).
## The Danger of Human Planning Over Divine Direction
Ellen White gave a powerful warning about trying to control God's work according to human ideas: **"Let me tell you that the Lord will work in this last work in a manner very much out of the common order of things, and in a way that will be contrary to any human planning. There will be those among us who will always want to control the work of God, to dictate even what movements shall be made when the work goes forward under the direction of the angel who joins the third angel in the message to be given to the world"** (
TM 299). This reveals that some will resist God's way simply because it doesn't match their expectations or preferences.
She warned that well-meaning workers can become obstacles if they insist on their own methods: **"Workers may make mistakes, but you should give them a chance to correct their errors, give them an opportunity to learn caution, by leaving the work in their hands"** (
TM 299). The danger is not just in making mistakes, but in refusing to allow God to work through imperfect instruments in unexpected ways.
## The Root Problem: Pride and Self-Confidence
At the heart of resistance to God's way is human pride. Ellen White observed: **"If God's people were all connected with Him, they would discern the limited capacities of these men, their prejudices, envy, jealousy, and self-confidence. The objections which their wicked hearts may raise against the Testimonies of the Spirit of God, will not, in the providence of God, be removed"** (
4T 335.2). Those who resist God's guidance are often **"seeking light from their own tapers and not from the Sun of Righteousness"** (
4T 335.2).
She emphasized that genuine love for Christ produces obedience, not resistance: **"Genuine love for Christ will lead directly to hearty obedience to all the law of God, and there will be the deepest repentance whenever they break, or teach men by their example to break one of the least of God's commandments"** (
PaM 97.4). When people claim to love Christ while resisting His commandments or His guidance through His appointed messengers, they reveal hearts that have **"never been humbled"** (
4T 335.2).
## The Increasing Opposition in the Last Days
Ellen White warned that this spirit of resistance will intensify as we approach the end: **"Now as in former ages, the presentation of a truth that reproves the sins and errors of the times will excite opposition"** (
GC 458.2). Those who stand for unpopular truth will face the same treatment as God's messengers in every age—**"Elijah was declared to be a troubler in Israel, Jeremiah a traitor, Paul a polluter of the temple. From that day to this, those who would be loyal to truth have been denounced as seditious, heretical, or schismatic"** (
GC 458.2).
The ultimate manifestation of this resistance will come when **"the laws of the state will so conflict with the law of God that whosoever would obey all the divine precepts must brave reproach and punishment as an evildoer"** (
GC 458.2). At that time, those who have been resisting God's way will align themselves with the powers of darkness against those who remain faithful.
